How to create a child account

Before your child can receive their first allowance, work toward a savings goal, or complete tasks for rewards, they need their own child account inside KiddyCash. A child account (also called a kiddy account) is a supervised wallet that sits under your family account. You control it — your child simply uses it.

If you have not yet set up your family account, start there first. Create your family account before continuing with the steps below.

What you will need

  • An active KiddyCash family account
  • Your child’s first name and date of birth
  • A few minutes — the setup takes under five minutes

Steps to create a child account

  1. Open KiddyCash and sign in. Use the email address and password linked to your family account. If you are on mobile, tap the KiddyCash icon to launch the app.

  2. Go to your family dashboard. Once signed in, you will see your family overview screen. This shows your family balance and any existing kiddy accounts. To check your current family balance before adding a child, visit your family account balance.

  3. Tap “Add a child.” On the family dashboard, look for the Add a child button, usually shown with a small profile icon and a plus sign. Tap it.

  4. Open the child account creation page. You can also go directly to the creation page at https://kiddy.cash/family/kiddy/account/create. This takes you straight to the form without navigating through menus.

  5. Enter your child’s details. Fill in:

    • First name — the name that will appear on their wallet and in reports
    • Date of birth — used to set age-appropriate features and spending limits
    • Profile photo (optional) — helps you tell accounts apart if you have more than one child
  6. Set a starting allowance amount. You will be asked if you want to set up a recurring allowance now. This is the regular amount of money your child receives — weekly or monthly — directly into their kiddy wallet. For example, a parent in Nairobi might set KES 500 every Friday. You can skip this step and add it later. Not sure how much to set? Read why allowances matter for modern families for guidance.

  7. Review and confirm. Check that the name and date of birth are correct, then tap Create account. KiddyCash will create the kiddy wallet instantly.

  8. Share access with your child (optional). After the account is created, you can generate a child login PIN so your child can view their own balance and goals on a shared device. You stay in full control — they cannot move money without your approval.

What happens next

Once the child account is live, you can:

  • Set up tasks your child completes to earn their allowance
  • Create savings goals — for example, saving toward a school trip or a new toy
  • Issue loans that teach responsible borrowing and repayment
  • Award badges to celebrate financial milestones

Allowances are a powerful way to build money habits early. Learn how allowances work as a family financial tool to get the most out of the feature.

Tip: If you fund your family wallet via M-Pesa, make sure your family account balance is topped up before scheduling an allowance. Allowances draw from your family balance automatically on the day they are due.
