How to create a school class
Before you can enrol students and start tracking their financial literacy progress on KiddyCash, you need to set up at least one class. A class is a group within your school — think of it like a stream or grade level, for example Grade 4 East or Form 2 Science — that helps you organise students and manage their KiddyCash wallets together.
This guide walks you through creating a class for the first time on the KiddyCash Schools portal.
Before you begin
Make sure you have:
- A verified school administrator account on the KiddyCash Schools portal. If your account is still under review, you will not be able to create classes yet.
- Your school’s KiddyCash dashboard open in a browser.
Steps to create a class
-
Log in to the KiddyCash Schools portal at schools.kiddy.cash using your administrator email and password.
-
Navigate to Classes. On the left-hand sidebar, click Classes. This section is where all your school’s classes live. If this is your first time here, the list will be empty.
-
Click “Create Class”. You will see this button in the top-right corner of the Classes page. Click it to open the class creation form.
-
Enter a class name. Choose a name that is clear and recognisable to other staff. For example, Grade 6 A, JSS 3 Blue, or Standard 5 Morning work well. Avoid vague names like Group 1 that may become confusing as your school grows.
-
Select a class level or grade from the dropdown menu. This helps KiddyCash group your classes correctly when generating reports — for instance, if your school is in Nairobi and you want to compare savings habits across all Grade 5 students.
-
Assign a teacher (optional). If your school has set up teacher accounts, you can link a teacher to this class now. You can also skip this step and add a teacher later by editing the class.
-
Click “Save Class”. Your new class will now appear in your Classes list. It is active immediately, meaning you can begin enrolling students into it right away.
What happens next?
Once your class exists, it acts as a container for students. Each student you enrol will receive a KiddyCash wallet linked to that class. School administrators can monitor wallet balances, track badge progress, and see how students are engaging with saving — whether they are setting aside KES 50 a week from an M-Pesa-funded allowance or completing financial literacy challenges.
To see your newly created class and review its details, visit the class overview page. If you need to update the class name, level, or assigned teacher later, follow the steps in how to edit a school class.
Why this matters
Classes are the foundation of how KiddyCash organises financial education in schools. Once students are enrolled, they begin learning concepts like saving, budgeting, and — when the curriculum progresses — investing. If you are curious about where that journey can lead, the KiddyCash blog explores why investing is a concept kids can learn younger than you think, and offers practical guidance on how to explain investing to a child without the jargon.
