How to create a task for a child

Assigning tasks is one of the most practical ways to connect money with effort in your child’s mind. Whether you’re in Nairobi or Mombasa, teaching your child that rewards come from real work — not just asking — builds habits that last. If you’re curious about the bigger picture, this guide on teaching saving without the lectures is worth a read before you get started.

In KiddyCash, a task is a chore or activity you assign to a child in your family. When the child completes the task, they can earn a reward — usually a set amount added to their kids’ wallet (their personal in-app balance). Tasks are reviewed and approved by you, the parent, before any reward is paid out.

Before you begin

Make sure you have:

  • A KiddyCash account with at least one child added to your family
  • Your child’s profile set up and linked to your family dashboard

If you haven’t added a child yet, do that first from your family settings.

Steps to create a task

  1. Open the task creation page. Go directly to https://kiddy.cash/family/kiddy/account/task/create while logged in to your KiddyCash account. This takes you straight to the task form.

  2. Select the child. From the Assign to dropdown, choose the child you want to give the task to. If you have multiple children in your family, make sure you pick the right one.

  3. Enter a task name. Type a short, clear name in the Task name field. Be specific — “Wash the dishes after dinner” is better than “Chores.” Your child will see this name in their app.

  4. Write a description (optional but recommended). Use the Description field to explain exactly what the child needs to do to complete the task. For example: “Wash, rinse, and stack all dishes after supper. Wipe the kitchen counter too.” Clear instructions reduce back-and-forth.

  5. Set the reward amount. Enter how much the child will earn in KES if they complete the task. This amount is held until you approve the task — it is not paid out automatically. Think of this as your agreement with your child upfront.

  6. Set a due date. Choose a deadline from the Due date picker. This helps your child know when the task needs to be done by, and helps you track open tasks.

  7. Choose whether the task repeats. If this is a regular chore — like taking out the rubbish every Friday — toggle on Recurring task and set the frequency (daily, weekly, or monthly). For a one-time task, leave this off.

  8. Review and save. Check all the details, then tap Create task. The task will appear in your child’s task list immediately.

What happens next

Your child will see the task in their KiddyCash app and can mark it as complete when they’re done. You’ll get a notification to review and approve it. Once you approve, the reward is credited to their kids’ wallet — similar to how a parent might send money via M-Pesa, but entirely within the app.

You can check the status of any task at any time — learn how in How to view a child’s task. If you need to update the reward amount, description, or due date after saving, see How to edit a child’s task.

Building this kind of structure early pays off. Research shows that saving habits matter most when learned young — and tasks are one of the simplest ways to make that lesson real.
